The Waiting Room: Support for Queer Folks in Fertility Treatment

Fertility treatment can surface anger about cost, access, invisibility, and the constant need to advocate for yourself as a queer person.

You can want this deeply and still feel furious, resentful, or exhausted by having to keep showing up anyway.

The Waiting Room is a bi-weekly therapist-led support group for queer folks navigating fertility treatments and the complex feelings that come with them.

Whether you’re between cycles, awaiting results, managing uncertainty, or holding complicated feelings about hope, grief, cost, bodies, and timelines—this group offers a place to land.

Together, we’ll create space to talk honestly about the emotional and relational impact of fertility treatment in a way that centers queer experiences. You don’t need to stay positive or know what comes next. This is a space to be witnessed, to feel less alone, and to find steadier footing while you’re in the in-between.

Who this group is for

  • Queer folks who are actively trying to conceive and/or undergoing fertility treatments (e.g., IUI, IVF, egg retrieval, embryo transfer)

  • People navigating the emotional impact of fertility treatment, including waiting, uncertainty, disappointment, grief, stress, or complicated hope

  • Individuals or partners who want a queer-centered space to talk openly about bodies, finances, medical systems, identity, and family-building

  • Folks seeking peer support alongside gentle therapeutic guidance

Who this group may not be a fit for

  • Those who are already pregnant or parenting and looking for postpartum or parenting support

  • People who are exploring future family-building but are not yet actively trying to conceive or engaged in fertility treatment

  • Individuals seeking medical advice or clinical fertility consultation (this group is emotionally focused, not medical)

  • Those looking for a space centered on positivity-only or outcome-focused discussions

  • The support group takes place virtually. A link will be emailed to you after signing up.

    Attendees can be located anywhere!

  • There is no cost to attend. We encourage you to make a donation if you are able.

This group is led by Gianna Rico, LCSW-C
